12 teams started and after the group stages only the four group winners were left standing, Crumlin, Ballymun Kickams, Thomas Davis and St Judes.
Semi Final one pitted Ballymn Kickams from AFL 1 against Crumlin from AFL 4, a foregone conclusion perhaps? The game was a thrilling contest with Kickams just edging it in the end, an excellent game with Kickams overall experience helping them into the final.
Semi Final two saw Thomas Davis and St Judes do battle. Another tough tussle with the reult eventually favouring the Kiltipper men. So the inaugral Tomas Mulligan 7 a side tournament found its two finalists, a classic Northside V Southside battle was in store, Ballymun Kickams v Thomas Davis.
An enthralling final was expected and both teams didn't dissappoint, Davis' were slick in their movement, the passing and movement was a joy to watch but Kickams werent there to make up the numbers. Tough and tenacious the boys in red and green mounted several counter attacks opting to strike from distance and picking off some fine points in the process. Two points in it at half time and it was anyones game. The second half started at a rip roaring pace with both teams eager to get a foothold but as the game wore on Davis' slightly better fitness was beginning to tell. A couple of quick scores just before the end more put the icing on the cake for Paul Curran's troops. So Thomas Davis were crowned very worthy winners of the Tomas Mulligan 7's 2008.
The pre final entertainment pitted a team of Dublin Legends against a team of passionate Dublin Supporters known as the 'Reservoir Dubs'. This team was made up of bloggers from the very popular reservoirdubs.com website which discusses and debates all things Dublin GAA!! The Dublin legends team having been in action the day before were short of a few regulars so some very brave Good Counsel players were more than willing to step in and don the Blue and Navy.
In what was a very sporting but tough contest the reservoirdubs team seemed to have the edge with some excellently taken scores. At halftime the bloggers were 0-4 ; 0-1 ahead but in the second half some very questionable refereeing decisions meant that at full time the scores were level at 0-7 apiece. It was decided to go to penalties due to the exploits of the legends team the day before. Reservoirdubs keeper Ron Maloney proved to be the hero and didnt concede one penalty. Counsel's very own 'Ojay' was on hand later that night to receive the trophy on the teams behalf. Both sides are very much looking forward to the rematch next year.
